Best Chutney for Cheese

Fish and chips, strawberries and cream, chutney and cheese - we all love the classic gastronomic duos.

We don't believe there is one best chutney for cheese - we love them all!

The route to cheese and chutney nirvana is pairing different chutney flavours with a specific type of cheese to enhance the complex flavours of our number one food even more.

We have done the hard work for you and compiled a list of our favourite cheese and chutney pairings.

Tomato chutney

A classic spiced tomato chutney is one of our favourite savoury flavours. It provides a perfect complement to cheeses with a robust salty flavour, like Parmesan.

But we also enjoy spicy tomato chutney with mild cheeses as the slight acidity of the fruit cuts through the nutty sweetness of a cheese like Gouda, or to complement the tomato and garlic flavours of our Italiano cheddar.

Fig chutney

We love combining fig chutneys' sweetness with a soft, creamy brie or camembert.

There is just something about the mix of figgy jamminess and the softer texture of smooth, mild cheese that feels luxurious and self-indulgent to us.

If you prefer a more dynamic pairing, try fig chutney with a blue cheese like Stilton or Gorgonzola. Enjoy that complementary kick of umami with the honeyed sweet flavour of the figs.

Onion chutney

Delicious cheese and onion crisps are the nation's favourites for good reason. Onion is the perfect foil for any mature cheese and ideal if you love very strong flavours.

What could be better than onion chutney with blue cheese, or an excellent tangy cheddar like our Vintage Aged cheddar?

A toasted cheese and onion chutney sandwich is undoubtedly food for the gods!

Mango chutney

Tangy mango chutney is a classic accompaniment to curry, so it can more than hold its own against the robust flavours of aged cheeses or a delicious strong cheddar such as our Black Bob Extra Mature Cheddar.

Apple chutney

We love a fruity chutney, and we particularly relish the sweet crispness of apple chutney as a contrast to a creamy cheese like brie or camembert.

An apple chutney also pairs beautifully with our traditional Cheshire cheese, with sweet flavours of apple and the classic Cheshire tang a match made in heaven.

Spicy chutneys

Chilli chutney, sometimes called chilli jam, is becoming increasingly popular with cold meat. Our Gourmet Red Chilli Jam provides a piquant accompaniment to smoked cheddar or to balance a sweeter cheese such as our Masala Red Leicester.

Of course, there is no need to restrict your cheeses and chutneys to the cheese board during the festive season. We love to use these combinations all year round in sandwiches and salads, too.
