What Pairs Well With Truffle Cheese?

Hunter, our Luxury Truffle & Cracked Black Pepper Mature Cheddar has a uniquely sophisticated taste that blends the creamy tang of mature cheddar with the earthy and aromatic flavour of truffle mince. Our new recipe adds the vibrant warmth of cracked black pepper.

This indulgent cheese deserves to be served with carefully chosen accompaniments that will complement rather than overwhelm its sensational flavour.

Foods to serve with truffle cheese

Black truffles, like those in our luxurious Hunter cheese, have a subtle earthy flavour that pairs well with a variety of other foods.

We have chosen a few accompaniments that we believe you will enjoy with your truffle cheese, but you will undoubtedly enjoy discovering some of your own favourites.

Truffle cheese doesn't need anything complicated to make it sing. A simple cheese board with some of the following will be a stylish and delicious table centre or cheese course.

Crackers and bread

Simple crusty bread or plain crackers are flavour-neutral and will allow you to experience the full luscious taste of your truffle cheese.

Fruit

Acidic fruits may overwhelm the exquisite flavour of the truffle, but the fresh sweetness of fruits like apples, pears and grapes complements the saltiness of the cheese and allows the subtle tones of the truffle to linger on the palate.

Cold meats

Salami, parma ham, prosciutto, and lightly smoked fish have deliciously earthy flavours that will reflect but never overpower those of your truffle cheese.

Olives

Olives in brine like Greek Kalamata black olives add a salty kick to the flavour of rich creamy truffle cheese.

Honey

Honey is often overlooked as a condiment for cheese in the UK, but the Romans have been using its sweetness to complement the umami flavours of mature cheese for centuries. A few drops of honey over your cheese will enhance its earthy flavour.

More traditional condiments like fruit chutneys are also delicious with truffle cheese.

Wine

Cheese and wine are a match made in flavour heaven, and your truffle cheese will be perfectly complemented by a medium wine with fruity notes, like a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir.

If you are in a celebratory mood, the light fizz of a fine Champagne will cut through the creamy texture of the cheese in a most refreshing way.

Foods to avoid when you are serving truffle cheese

It is easy to compromise the subtly nuanced flavour of truffle cheese by serving food or drink that overpowers its delicate but earthy taste and aroma.

To experience your cheese at its best, avoid serving it with heavily seasoned foods and spices. The acidity of tomatoes or vinegar dressings can also affect the flavour of the cheese.

Wines to avoid include those high in tannic acid or heavily oaked, as these will overwhelm the flavour of the black truffle.

Cooking with truffle cheese

Our truffle cheese is ideal for cooking simple, tasty dishes. Again it is best to avoid using heavy seasoning and strong competing flavours that will diminish your enjoyment of the black truffles.

A simple cream pasta sauce with garlic and mushrooms is elevated to luxury status with the addition of grated truffle cheese, take a look at our Hunter pappardelle recipe

The rich intensity of the truffle flavour becomes even more profound as the cheese melts and the pasta provides a perfect vehicle for this luscious sauce.
